问一个关于离婚后孩子抚养权的问题

有个朋友和妻子分居已有若干年了，他们有个不满6岁的孩子，
朋友和孩子之间的感情很深，如果离婚的话是一定想要这个孩
子的。孩子也一直跟着他生活，并且表示要和DADY在一起。但
是妈妈现在也想要这个孩子。是不是美国离婚母亲总是有对孩
子的监护优先权？
朋友要怎么做才有可能争取到对孩子的监护权？孩子自己的选择法
庭会考虑吗？
