marital asset vs. joint asset

All joint asset are marital asset, but not all marital asset are joint asset.

For example, a husband's 401K savings acquired during marriage is marital asset subject to division, but the account is husband only.

Joint asset:  assets that is titled to husband and wife jointly.
Marital asset:  asset acquired by either party during marriage.

In a venn diagram, marital asset is the bigger circle, within which lies the joint asset.
