help: hit and run

A Mexican hit me from behind due to did not stop on time, and run away. I filed a police report and since I have his tag number, police traced his name, address and insurance company.

I am wondering if I should file with his insurance company right now, or wait till police talk to him or give him some kind of ticket.

Anyone knows what is the typical procedure for this kind of case?
I mean, what police can and will do? What should I do? Is his insurance company willing to accept the claim? How long does it take?
