It's very serious. If you don't hire a attorney to make this case disappear, then you would end up with a criminal record.
I had a friend with similar experience. Her son was driving with his parents in the car with some loud chinese music playing, the police car was following them with the siren on and the flashing light on (I forget the violation my friend's son had, probably speeding), but for long time nobody in the car noted that. Finally the police stopped them, and put the driver in the jail. They had to spend some money to hire a attorney to have this case dropped. Anyway the boy was in jail for one day and one night. If you are considerring to stay in this country, then you don't want to have any criminal record. Otherwise, almost everything will be affected, such as loan application, employment, and so on.
