http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/4860/legal_matters/service_by_substitution_in_california.html
It says:
"Reasonable diligence has been interpreted differently in different jurisdictions, however, we have found that if three attempts are made at least eight hours apart and if at least two of those attempts are made at the address where the papers are served then a substituted service on the fourth attempt is usually considered valid."
Be aware, this is a summary of experiences throughout California jurisdictions. The language uses "usually considered valid", there is no guarantee in your specific local court.
And you have to show evidences of all four attempts.
Even if your service is valid, default judgment is not automatically granted. See this Orange county clerks of court check list. You only proved the first step of "proof of service".
