交通事故请教 - help!

I had a car accident in California last year. I was at fault. My insurance company already settled the claim with the other party after the accident. Now a year later, the other party again filed a civil law suit against the insurance company and me. Due to the job reason, I already left the country. My relative in the states told me that the insurance company's lawyer wants to contact me. My question is since I am not in the country, should I go through all the trouble to contact the lawyer? If I don't, what is the consequence? What is the best action I should take?
I am worrying about this everyday. Hope to get some help and advice from there.
