Child Credit _ audit please help out

I filed the 1040, put my kid's as dependent, and took the $1000 credit,
but I forgot to change the ITIN to SSN, they want me to file schedule 8812 because I used ITIN on the 1040 for my kid,
yes, after filing schedule 8812 with current ITIN, I can't claim the credit anymore,

but my kid applied for SSN last year, can I call them, say my kid has SSN,
I can give you SSN, then I don't need to file schedule 8812, then I am still qualified the $1000 credit,
they just changed this part policy this year, I didn't notice, just filed it out as I did form previous years.
This si the first time I got audit. Thanks.
