If you tell cop the suspect, it's called tip off, 算是协助调查,not 诽谤.
Anyway, it's a good idea not to call the cop, but call your credit card company. They have much better dectives than cops. And major credit cards have zero liability policy, you don't have to pay the money been stolen if you report.
