gardener61 is right

F1 student visa is not considered as a resident and, therefore, is not eligible for EIC, child tax credit, education credit ($2500 per student in 2009 tax year, eligible for maximum 4 years), or first-time homebuyer credit ($8000, or $6500, depending on situations). Although IRS does not check everyone's tax file, they does check randomly for a certain percent of the files. Once you are caught, probably all your tax files in the past few years will also be checked and you will need to pay back the principle, interest and fine.
