You indeed need to hire a good patent lawyer and keep him on yor "payroll".
If your company is good at patents and sues you, you need to prove the patent has nothing to do with your knowledges and experiences obtained from your current employment. Submitting the patent through your wife's name may fool the US Patent Office, but may still be caught by your company. The best thing to do is to quit the job now, wait for some time, keep evidence to prove that you come up with the invention reasonably long enough after you quit the job.
Before you submit the patent, consider the following:
Can you and how to profit from the patent?
Is infringement detectable and the patent defendable?
The unfortunate truth is, the vast majority of patents do not make justifiable profits. On average in US, a profitable patent needs $20K for defense.
