据英国《每日邮报》网站7月29日报道，在上世纪60年代到70年代美国的6次登月之旅中，每一次宇航员都会在月球表面插上一面国旗，作为美国成功登月的标志。从最新照片可以看到，除1969年第一次成功登月后留下的那面国旗外，其余5面仍然直立在月球上。
月球探测器发回的最新高分辨率图像显示，随着月球围绕自己的轨道运行，这些美国国旗产生了阴影，据此科学家得出了它们还处于直立状态的结论。
月球卫星项目的研究者马克·罗宾逊27日接受采访时说：“1969年执行第一次登月任务的登月舱驾驶员巴兹·奥尔德林也曾报告称，‘阿波罗11号’在离开月球的过程中，其引擎喷射出的强大气流吹倒了那面国旗，而这一说法正好与目前的结论相吻合。”
现在，最新发回的这批照片证明了大部分国旗依然存在。“就个人而言我感到有些惊讶，这些国旗在严重的紫外线照射、月球表面高温等恶劣环境中竟然还能存在。”罗宾逊说。
1969年7月20日，“阿波罗11号”载人登月任务成功完成。执行登月任务的宇航员阿姆斯特朗通过电视直播喊出这样一句话：“这是我个人的一小步，却是全人类的一大步。”
Decades later, America's mark on the moon remains: All but one of the flags left by the Apollo missions are still flying. Scientists reviewed photos taken by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, sent to study the moon in 2009. The images show shadows revolving throughout the day around the flags' believed locations, the BBC reports. "I was a bit surprised that the flags survived the harsh ultraviolet light and temperatures of the lunar surface, but they did," says one of the scientists. The only fallen flag is from Apollo 11, just as Buzz Aldrin has said: Engine exhaust knocked it over when the vehicle took off.
