The Revolutionary War

The Revolutionary War was a war fought between the Americans and the British. It was a direct result of excessive British taxing on colonists residing within the thirteen British colonies of America. On America’s side were Spain, the Dutch, and France. Some Native Americans helped the British.

From 1754 to 1763, the French and British (helped by their Native American allies) fought a long a bloody war over land in the Ohio River Valley, entitled the French and Indian War. The British Army and some volunteer colonists valiantly struggled to conquer land that they believed to be theirs. After the war ended in 1763, Britain suffered a huge drop in funds – the consequence of sending thousands of troops to a destination three thousand miles away, with the goal of fighting. The British had no choice but to tax the colonists they fought for, and in some cases, died for. The Americans were outraged by the fact that they were receiving “taxation without representation” in the British Parliament. Thus, they tarred and feathered tax collectors, and participated in protests such as the Boston Tea Party. With both sides angered to a point of no acquiesce, there was no option but for a war to commence.

The Americans had created a Congress prior to the war for independence. Those members believed that the motherland of the colonies in which they resided was being oppressive, and made an appropriate list of grievances. That attempt for reform was made into part of a document called the “Declaration of Independence.” The other parts of the document involved standards by which the rulers of a separate America would follow, such as only ruling with the consent of the governed, the right to life, liberty, and justice, and the obligation for citizens to forcefully remove any government commonly viewed as oppressive. This Congress created an army of its own to fight for liberation, and set French and Indian War veteran George Washington as its commander in chief on the battlefield. Many African Americans also took part in this war for freedom.

Despite the American vision that the British were warmongering dictators, many British members of Parliament and military officials were reluctant to partake in battle. All the British wanted to do was maintain control of the colonies and continue with the mercantilism aspect of the relationship between the thirteen colonies and the mainland – there was no intention of depriving colonists of their rights. Eventually, the royalty demanded for the mobilizing of the army and crushing of the American rebellion, and even the most reluctant generals of the British army were forced to follow the orders given to them.

During the Revolutionary War, there were many incidents that occurred. Some of them include Jefferson and Franklin attempting to enlist allies, France being the foremost of them. Also, in the Battle of Bunker/Breed’s Hill, the Continental Army proved that a simple militia of peasants could have the courage to face a renowned horde of Redcoats. The Battle of Saratoga was another turning point during the war – the Americans winning a clash at such a vital location convinced the French that aiding the Americans would not be a waste of resources. At the very end of the war, the Siege of Yorktown forced the final surrender of the British forces after weeks of cannon fire from the French, cavalry fire from the Americans, and depletion of resources.

The Revolutionary War was also responsible for the ignition of rebellions in the colonial western hemisphere. After seeing the Americans succeed in defeating the tax-issuing British, the French lower class revolted against the noble class. In southern colonies, this war triggered a chain reaction of Mexico, Haiti, and many other Latino colonies demanding separation from the motherland. Even centuries after the war, the gallant spirit of the American founding fathers inspired oppressed regions in Africa to fight against those who denied them the ability to live as the wanted.

The American Revolutionary War was the first example of a modern colony rising up against its ruler, and caused many other nations to strive for freedom as well. It was filled with turning points and bloody battles, and careful planning on both sides.

The Revolutionary War

The Revolutionary War took place between the years of 1775 and 1783, and was fought among the Americans and the British within the British colonies of America, with no clashes in Europe. It was a direct result of excessive British taxing on the colonists residing in the American lands colonized by Britain. Both America and Britain were allied with co-belligerents during this war – for America, those allies were France, Spain, and the Netherlands, whereas Britain was helped by the Native American tribes of Onondaga, Seneca, Cherokee, Cayuga, and Mohawk.

From 1754 to 1763, the French and British, assisted by their Native American allies, fought a long and bloody war over land in the Ohio River Valley, called the French and Indian War. The British Army and some volunteer colonists valiantly struggled to conquer land that they believed to be theirs. After the French and Indian war ended in 1763, the British treasury suffered a drastically severe deficit. Leading to this economic downfall were two factors -- Britain had sent, at a lofty cost, its veritable army three thousand miles away to a foreign destination in America, and the legions of soldiers deployed were required to stay in the colonies for the extremely long time of nine years. Consequentially, the British had no choice but to tax the colonists they fought for, and in some cases, died for – all for the single purpose of acquiring fertile farmland. The Americans were outraged by the fact that they were receiving “taxation without representation” in the British Parliament. Thus, they tarred and feathered tax collectors, and participated in protests such as the Boston Tea Party – an event in which patriotic colonists decided to throw a million pounds of tea overboard in an attempt to make it impossible for the hated “Tea Tax” to be gathered. The effect of the Boston Tea Party was not the end of taxes, but instead the blockade of the Boston Harbor until the Bostonians had paid to the British the value of the tea and the passing of the Intolerable Acts. With both sides at a quandary with no peaceful solution, the only means of ending this conflict was the oncoming of war.

The Americans had created a Congress prior to the Revolutionary War. Those members, including Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and James Monroe, believed that the motherland of the colonies in which they resided was being oppressive in terms of ruling and made an appropriate list of grievances speaking of how King George had wronged the Americans, and what he could do to ensure peaceful American loyalty. That attempt for reforming how America was ruled was made into part of a document called the “Declaration of Independence.” The other parts of the document involved standards by which the rulers of an America separate from Britain would follow, such as only ruling with the consent of the governed, the right to life, liberty, and justice, and the obligation for citizens to forcefully remove any government commonly viewed as oppressive. This Congress created an army of its own to fight for liberation, and set French and Indian War veteran George Washington as its commander in chief on the battlefield. Many African Americans also took part in this war for freedom.

Despite the American vision that the British were heartless warmongers who existed to seize control of farmers’ funds, many British members of Parliament and military officials were reluctant to partake in battle. All the British wanted to do was maintain control of the colonies and continue with the mercantilism aspect of the relationship between the thirteen colonies and the mainland – there was no intention of depriving colonists of their natural rights (as many colonial delegates claimed) of life, liberty, and justice. After the tarring and feathering of British tax collectors, protests, petitions insulting the King’s ability to do as he wishes, insolent acts undermining the power of the crown, and harsher enforcement of British decrees, there were strong feelings of antagonism between the rebels and the supporters of British rule. Eventually, King George demanded for the mobilizing of the British army and crushing of the American rebellion, and even the most reluctant generals of the British army were forced to follow the orders given to them.

Many important events occurred during the American Revolutionary War that impacted the formation of America. Some of them include Jefferson and Franklin attempting to enlist allies, France being the foremost of them. In the Battle of Bunker/Breed’s Hill, the Continental Army proved that a simple militia formed by peasants could have the courage and skill to face a renowned horde of Redcoats. The Battle of Saratoga was a turning point during the war – the Americans winning a clash at such a vital location convinced the French that aiding the Americans would not be a waste of resources. At the end of the war, the British troops finally surrendered Yorktown to the Americans as a result of interminable battering at the fort’s walls from French cannons, destructive loss of troops from American cavalry fire, and exhaustion of the British food supplies. When the British King heard of this degeneration of his forces, he eventually convinced the British government to order the army to retreat back to England, signifying surrender to the Americans.

The American struggle for independence was responsible for the ignition of rebelliousness in the colonial western hemisphere and in corrupt, poverty-stricken nations. After seeing the Americans succeed in defeating the tax-issuing British, the French lower class revolted against the noble class. In southwestern colonies, this war triggered a chain reaction of Mexico, Haiti, and many other Latino colonies demanding separation from the motherland. Even centuries after the war, the gallant spirit of the American founding fathers inspired the oppressed regions in Africa to fight against those who denied them the ability to live as they wanted.

The Revolutionary War was filled with many turning points, bloodstained battles, and careful planning on both sides. It was the first example of a modern colony rising up and defending itself against a superpower, and it ignited the spark that led to other nations striving for independence and a better habit to reside in.
