唐朝宰相 袁恕己 是神龙政变的发动者之一，逼武则天退位，拥立唐中宗复辟。然而中宗是个软蛋，韦皇后把持朝政，跟情人武三思一起把几个重臣贬到边疆，袁恕己贬到环州（甘肃），然后让周利贞把他们除掉。

周利贞把袁恕己抓起来，逼他喝下一升的野葛汁。袁恕己体内毒发，疼痛难忍，以手抓地，指甲全被磨尽，但仍不能死，最终被周利贞击杀。
