be careful. I have that problem before, due to "over use" -- the doctor said. I can not walk stairs for 1 year, can not run for 2 year.
I was a soccer player. But I do not go to the weight room to train the muscle on my leg, especially around the knee, to keep may muscle balance around the knee to keep the knee cap on the center position, also, reduce the impact on the knee when running. So year after year, the problem build up, and originally I think it is just sore, so rest a couple of days, then play again. Then on one weekend, I fall on the field when I try to do a turn, and that was it, I can not even lift my lower leg.
Physical therapy may help, if at early stage. Otherwise surgery may be an option. But I did not do it, just wait and let it heal. At that time I was 33, and able to run again at 35. But I stop playing soccer for good, instead, play tennis. And stop jogging for good, instead, excercise on elliptical, so much less impact on knee. And so far so good, play tennis for 6 years now.
The key to recovery, is stretch, and muscle training to keep the knee balanced and knee cap centered to reduce the carlilage damage and tenden damage.
