J-1 and B2 are totally different visa categories.

J1 is exchange visitor visa, you can work and get paid during J1 period. The maxium of J1 period is 3 years generally. There is alsp a 2 year home country residency obligation for J1, unless you get a waiver.

B2 is tourist visa, you can't work in US. The maxium of staying usually is 6 months, decided by INS officer at the port of entry.
