-Technically you can not work because you are not in F-1 status, but practically it might be OK for you to continue to work on-campus because after you get the F-1 reinstatement, your F-1 status has no gap and thus, USCIS might not tell your illegal work.  Ask your school to issue the new I-20 with the effective date on the date your old I-20 expired, thus your F-1 status will have no gap after you get the F-1 reinstatement. Also, if you visit China and come back using a visa (F-1, H-1, etc.) in the future before you apply for green card (file I-485), your illegal work record will be removed automatically.
