went to US Virgin Islands for Vacation, back to US, reentry

We went there for vacation, and on the way back, we were stopped by custom, asking for visa. We did not bring H1 with us, and explained to them, they found our records and let us come back.

Now the question is, does that count to clear up out of status record before leaving for US Virgin Islands?

I mean, for 485 adjudication purpose, you can not be out of status for 180 days from last entry, our last entry was from US Virgin Islands, it was US terrority, not 50 states. We went there for vacation only.
