I don't think it's risky at all. No need to go to canada or mexi

If you are going to canada just for visa, it may makes it harder for you to get the visa---check Pjiang's blog.

I got H1B visa in Beijing last year smoothly. I don't think it matters what status you were. The point is, you are H1 now. H1B allows immigration intention.
