办理H1过程中被layoff怎么办?

My friend just got laid off today, which is the 30th day of his working time. He is now in grey period, which means his legal status will expire in the middle of next month. His H1-B is being processed, but the company didn't sign yet.
So the question is in this situation, how can he get the legal status, can the old company still help him in applying H1-B? Or he need find a new job in no more than 20 days? Any other options? Thanks so so much!! Bow!!!!!
