为友求助关于out of stay和illegal stay区别

我友，F1身份来美读博，与老板闹翻后一学期没再注册，距今半年有余。请问这个情况是out of stay还是illegal stay，据说前者有离境后三年之内不得再入境美国的限制？该友最近醒悟，欲申请同一学校的re-admission回国签证再来，是否能够迅速返美，还应该注意什么问题？谢谢。
