f-1,j-1 student difference

I want to pursue PH.D in u.s.but now my visa type is j-1 visiting scholar.i will go to Mexico to change visa type for j-1 student or F-1.BUT I don't know the difference between j-1 student and F-1.which one is better?could you recommend a better way?thank you so much.
