If you stayed in US with previous J1 more 180 days, once you went back to home country, you will need to stay in home country for at least 12 months before you re-enter. It seems your stay in China is only 6 months. If all above conditions are true for you, you can't re-enter with J1 until your stay in China is more 12 months.This rule doesn't apply to H1, but you are not eligible to apply for H1 now. Sometimes the immigration officer doesn't know this rule, then you may get J1.
