About Nintendo DS

Can I play diffenent game cards at the same Nintendo DS? I mean if the Nintendo has the memory function to start/resume from where I have played early? Sorry, this is may silly question, but I am new-Nintendo begninner and I am tired of play Pokemon and want to switch to play star wars, btu I am not so sure if I go back to play Pokemon again, should I start to play from begining??!!
