Later, I thought that perhaps Japan sought peace, and both sides rewrote the history of the war. At least the European theater was real. Now, I don't even believe the European theater anymore.

I'd rather live in a traditional society. When I was little, at my maternal grandmother's house, after the whole family finished eating, we'd sit around the table chatting—the adults talking, the children playing, with a kerosene lamp lit. The sky was full of stars, so clear and bright.
