United Parcel Service said it's cutting 20,000 positions this year and it declined to update its outlook for the year due to uncertainty in the current macroeconomic environment, even as results in its latest quarter came in above expectations.
The package-delivery company also disclosed guidance for the second-quarter would be issued on an earnings call later Tuesday.
UPS said that, in connection with expected lower volumes from its largest customer, the company began a network reconfiguration to "align our organizational processes of our facilities and workforce."
UPS also expects to close 73 leased and owned buildings this year and may look to identify more to close.
The company said it expects to record between $400 million and $600 million in expenses during 2025.
The Atlanta company recorded first-quarter net income of $1.19 billion, or $1.40 a share, up from $1.11 billion, or $ 1.30 a share, in the prior-year period.
Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings came in at $1.49 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $1.38 a share in adjusted earnings.
Revenue came in around $21.5 billion compared to $21.7 billion in the prior-year period. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $21 billion.
UPS said revenue in its domestic segment grew through increases in air cargo and an improvement in revenue per piece, while its international segment's revenue rose on an increase in average daily volume.
Chief Executive Carol Tome said actions by UPS to reconfigure its network and reduce costs couldn't be timelier given the uncertainty in the macroeconomic environment.
