Mozart pieces require a delicate and balanced melody. Yundi does not pay attention to either of those characteristics and invokes a heavy atmosphere in the music. Although it is reasonable to do this to some degree, playing the left hand and right hand at a near equal footing and doing little to bring out the contrast in the right hand does not make this interpretation sound Mozartian. Furthermore, Mozart indicates many changes in articulation, marked by the changes in tempo across the music. Yundi keeps a legato feel to the music even when there are no legato lines and even more, continues to play them as if it were a dramatic Beethoven sonata. All these factors - the lack of contrast and his disregarding of the melody line - detracts from the direction of every note and thus the overall quality of his performance.
