Most of Facebook's growth is coming from Asia. The U.S. and Canada only added 1 million users, and Europe is flat. But Asia now has 615 million users, compared with 600 million the prior quarter.
Users in the U.S. and Europe are valuable groups that have plateaued in recent reporting periods. Users in those regions are significantly more valuable to Facebook from an advertising perspective, so the diminished growth is notable. That’s likely why Facebook said this year that it would phase out the Facebook-only monthly active user metric. Soon it will only report one metric for users of all its apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.
