I am not suggesting that you go out shorting naked calls: only a fool will do that. Ever heard about delta-neutral trading, volatility spreads such as butterfly, OEX/SPX arbitrage, various time spreads etc.? A good starting point for someone like you is to go and read an option trading book such as Sheldon Natenberg's Option volatility and pricing strategies.
