Of the 35 recessions seen until the late 1930s, about half are classified as depressions, which are basically very severe recessions. Most of them did not last nearly as long as the Great Depression of the 1930s -- a period that actually, if you want to be technical about it, actually comprised two severe recessions: 1929-32 and 1937-38. Many of the depressions were kicked off by financial crises -- though not all.
