The phase out of R-410A, a high-GWP refrigerant used in air conditioning and HVAC systems, is expected to occur in several phases over the next few years:

Manufacturers will no longer be allowed to import or produce self-contained HVAC systems that use R-410A for residential and light commercial use. However, there will be a three-year sell-through period, allowing for the sale, export, and installation of these units through January 1, 2028.

The EPA will gradually reduce the production of HFCs by 85% over 15 years, with efforts plateauing at a 15% decrease by 2036.

The GWP standard will be lowered, requiring another replacement refrigerant.
