Or just two thermostat. Normally one system can have two zones (two thermostates), there is a damper which control the Air Flow distribution to each zone, but you still only have one condenser (outdoor unit) and one indoor unit (normally your evap coil and blower motor), plus a damper. This is very common for two story house.
