First - year Fall： all semester (Pass / No Record)

You need about a C- or better to pass.

• P (Pass) = C− or better
• NR (No Record) = D or 

First-year spring 

ABC / No Record

You must earn:

• A, B, or C = passing and counts for GIR
• D or F = No Record (does not count)

Sophomore year and later

Standard A–F grading

Now:

• D is technically passing

MIT states: “Beginning in sophomore year, A through F grades will be reported, with D considered a passing grade.”

However:

• some departments may require a higher grade for prerequisites
• a D in a GIR prerequisite may make later courses difficult or require retaking
