It is bad for kids without mom. Not that kids cannot survive; but they would get hurt, mentally. They are more likely to be problem kids when they are old. You can ask for examples from 子女教育 forum.

Tell your friend it is good for him in the long run to let the kid stay with mom; and he keeps a good relationship with the mom. “头顶三尺有神灵” -- 做人有时太绝了，会有报应的。
