是否要注册 sole proprietorship ?

本人先为一个微型科技公司作  engineering contractor， 收入并不多。 自己也正在做一个课题，并想开发一些小产品（现在离这个目标还有些距离）。想请教一下是否要注册 sole proprietorship ？ 主要是看是否有Tax 方面的优点。

我自己的课题也要不少$$投入，是否要注册 sole proprietorship 才可以算Bussiness loss ?

本人在Massachusetts， 所知如果注册LLC，要file legal document for registration (~$500), 每年还要做annual report (cost $520), . 不知是否sole proprietorship 也要这样的 annual report ？
