Iran Nuclear Program During Pahlavi era

Initiation of the Nuclear Program

  • Iran’s nuclear program began in 1957, after it signed the Atoms for Peace agreement with the U.S.
  • In the 1970s, the Shah’s government launched an ambitious civilian nuclear program:
    • Acquired a research reactor from the U.S.
    • Signed contracts with Germany and France to build nuclear power plants
  • The goal was to have nuclear energy supply 50% of Iran’s electricity by the 1990s.
