Initiation of the Nuclear Program
- Iran’s nuclear program began in 1957, after it signed the Atoms for Peace agreement with the U.S.
- In the 1970s, the Shah’s government launched an ambitious civilian nuclear program:
- Acquired a research reactor from the U.S.
- Signed contracts with Germany and France to build nuclear power plants
- The goal was to have nuclear energy supply 50% of Iran’s electricity by the 1990s.
