How may I capture video file from camcorder

Hi, friends! I tried to connect my camcorder (video recorder) to my computer, but can not get my video file from computer. Is there anyway to capture video file from the connected device and edit my own movies, such as add music, songs and speak?? Please help me. Thank you very much!!
