XP has the option to "Repair" without formatting hard drive and losing your data. With "Repair" you also don't need to re-activate XP. Just boot your machine from XP CD and use the "Repair" option after it finds the previously installed XP. It's pretty much like a new installation but without losing any user data and re-activation.
