加内存条的问题

主板上有三个内存条插槽，其中两个各插一条256MB的内存，现在想再买一条256或者512MB的内存条插在空着的第三个槽上，不知道是否可行？这里不考虑三个内存条的频率是否一致。

请有经验的朋友指点指教。谢谢！
