SONY TRV27 and VAIO Laptop

I want to convert the MiniDV to DVD. I just found out that in the VAIO, there is a software, called DVgate. My understanding is, use a i.Link cable connect them together, run DVgate to capture the tape and save as a file, and then write it to a DVD.
Am I right? Thanks.
