Why my dell 19'' LCD doesn't d

Bought a dell 9100 with a digital 19'' LCD.
In Word or PowerPoint, pictures pasted can't be seen at regualr edit mode,it
just shows a white picture frame with nothing showing up, but pictures can be
seen at full scree mode or preview mode.
I don't know if it is related to resolution setup. I used highest resultion
1280x1024, and set fonts as large for better text viewsing. I tried lower the
resoltion, problems remain.
It is weird sometimes I can see pictures in Word or PowerPoint, most of the
time, I could not.
