help : can't detect hard drive

I try to install a new 80G hard drive to my IBM desktop.
and the drive was previous installed linux. But when I
hook it up to my desktop as the only master drive,(
disconnect the old drive) the computer can't even
detect the drive. It shuts down automatically when
i try to change the bios to boot from CD to install
xp on the hard drive. It shuts down every single time.
Help please. My computer is down for a while now.
Hope some masters can help me this time.
