why I cannot use router on DSL

I just install SBC/yahoo DSL. It works just fine with the modem connected directly to the modem. But when I tried to connect a router, it gives me lots of problem. Both of my D-link routers (one wired and one wireless) doesn't work at all and the linksys one (wireless) can work for a few second to a few hours and then lose connection. I don't know whether there are any setting I need to make on the router or the modem. Thanks for any suggestions.
