Read reviews for LCDs with good graphic/photograhic performance. Those good ones usually have smoother tone and good shadow detail. Cheap Dell LCDs (UltraSharp models with Samsung LCDs) are very good. Color accuracy is not a big problem. Even some laptop LCDs can be well calibrated with quality calibration software/hardware (such as Eye-One Display 2 and ColorEyes Display).

If you use reference CRT monitors (such as Barco), stay away from LCDs until further notice ;-)

If money is not an issue, try EIZO ColorEdge LCD monitors.
