need help for monitor!

The LCD screen of notebook computer was hit and got a two inches scratch by accident.Because I have some exams in next week,and I have to use the computer for my essey,so I don't have time to have it fixed right now.A friend of mine has an LCD monitor not in use.Can I connect to my notebook to it as a regular desktop?I don't want to destory either my notebook or my friend's monitor.
May be this is a stupid question.But help me,please!
