cable modem and signal...

I plan to setup high speed internet access thru cable modem. I believe I have all the equipment: splitter(i subscribed TV channels), cables, the motorola SBG5100 cable modem, D-Link router, USB and ethernet cables and drivers for USB.

I think I can setup them myself, but Comcast trying very hard to allow their technician coming into my apartment for the installation. Their reason is the signal could be weak and thus my modem would be locked. I have no experience. Can anyone here tell me if this is a likely scenario? If so, can I solve it myself?
