This is a coommon problem with low quality USB enclosures. The cause could be chipset, low current, bad connector,...

Use FBDISK program to find and isolate the bad sectors, then use Partition Commander to create, merge or split partitions. If your HD doesn't have too many bad sectors, Partition Magic may also work.
