How to check disk write speed?

I tried to capture Sony camcorder video to my Sony notebook (P3, 1GHZ, 512MB RAM) with Adobe Premniere 6 and got lots of dropped frames. Then I captured the same video with a cheap eMachine tesktop and got no problem at all.

I guess the problem with my Sony notebook is that it has a slow hard drive. Does anyone know how to check the read/write speed of hard drive without any third party software (I mean, just use WinXP built-in functionalities)?
