A question on Laptop battery

Hi, the question is if I put the battery on and use the AC adaptor, the battery will be charged all the time. This may decrease the life of the battery, right? So I am wondering whether I could take the battery out of the laptop and use AC adaptor only for supplying the power to it? I am not sure whether I could do this or not, so just ask. If you know, please share your experience!
