HELP: can't type chinese

i am using the window xp chinese pinyin input. it's not functioning these days. when i try to type Chinese in a webpage, the webpage will not be responding. and if i type in a word document, the document will bot be responding. This is a brand new laptop and i paid extra for the windows professional. This just worries me. Can anyone help? appreciate.
